With 71 days left till the 2026 World Cup kicks off, participating national teams are wrapping up with regards to final preparations for the tournament.
The Black Stars of Ghana in recent weeks have engaged in friendly matches as part of the measures to access its readiness for the tournament. These preparations has led to several outcomes including the sacking of its head coach Otto Addo. Before we talk about the sacking of the head coach, let’s rewind to some major highlights or revelations with regards to the teams performance in these friendly matches.

First of All, the friendly games with Austria and Germany exposed the weakness in the Ghana Black Stars defense. There were some individual impressive performances but as a collective, the technical mistakes of the defenders directly had an impact on most of the goals that were conceded.

Secondly, there were some positive revelations especially during their game with Germany. The Black Stars team excluding the defence, has a huge potential to face any team. There is a lot of quality in the team with regards to orchestrating attacks to create goalscoring opportunities.

The highlights or revelations cannot be complete without speaking about the goalkeepers. Both Benjamin Asare and Ati Zigi are individual brilliant goalkeepers but as a team, Benjamin Asare is better suited as the number 1 option with reference to his performance during the Germany game.

According to the Ghana Football Association President Kurt Okraku, reasons influenced the decision to sack the head coach. He disclosed this during an exclusive interview with 3Sports.In the interview he said, “When leading the team, you may have your strong opinions about issues but there are moments you need to listen to the team for the greater good of our country and at this moment we thought it’s Ghana first and we have to go in a different direction”.

A critical assessment of the defensive setup, maintaining Benjamin Asare as the number one goalkeeper, an introduction of the right coach and maintaining the attacking team players will directly progress Ghana through the group stages and even to the knockout stage of the 2026 World Cup.

  1. Interesting article , No mention of the coach?
I’m not positive about the Black stars giving a good performance in this World Cup. They have the proclivity to exit out of the group stages.
