Just like any other country,snacks are very popular in Ghana.People like to eat them with their meals ,in between breakfast/lunch/dinners as well as standalone meals sometimes.There are several local snacks in Ghana which are served during occassions like wedding,funeral,parties etc.Some are also sold in the market areas,food joints as well as supermarkets.Below is alist of some local side meals(snacks) in Ghana to try.
1)Bofrot(toogbei)
Bofrot is a very popular side meal(snack) in Ghana.It can be eaten with koko(porridge) and even as a snack.The ingredients are a blend of bread flour,water,salt,yeast,nutmeg,sugar and melted butter.These ingredients are merged together with the bread flour which is then scooped and placed into a cooking pot with frying oil.It’s crunchy and very tasy.You will definitely love it.
2)Kosua ne Meko
Another popular local snack is Kosua ne Meko.Translating to English,it is simply understood as Egg and Pepper.Pepper specifically Ghanaian red pepper is inserted into a boiled egg which results in the unique taste identified as Kosua ne Meko.It is usually sold on street markets in Ghana.
3)Roasted Plantain and Groundnuts (Kofi Brokeman)
As the name implies,this popular snack in Ghana is prepared by roasting ripe plantain and serving it with peanuts.It’s very tasty and if you have several of them,you might end up being as satisfied as you would have been with a meal.
4)Khebab(Chichenga)
Ever heard of Suya? Khebab is basically the same.Beef,chicken,goat meat etc.It is very popular in Ghana and is usually sold by Abochies.They can be found at street markets,open pubs and restaurants as well as some local chop bars.Khebab is also served at events like weddings,parties,funerals etc.
5)Plantain Chips
There is another snack you can get from plantain. It is called plantain chips and it is very popular in Ghana. Unlike the roasted plantain(Kofi broke man),its a whole different preparation. Preferably you need the unripped plantain to make your chips crunchy. This unripped plantain is peeled, sliced and seasoned with salt. Afterwards it is fried. Plantain chips is eaten as a snack and is also found at parties, weddings, funerals etc.
